Ground Squirrel Portrait in Glacier National Park
This ground squirrel was photographed in Glacier National Park while it paused on a rocky outcrop near a trail, using the elevated position to keep watch over the surrounding area. Encounters like this are common in Glacier’s alpine and subalpine zones, especially along rocky slopes and open areas where squirrels are accustomed to passing hikers. I found that stopping quietly and letting the animal settle back into its routine allowed for more natural behavior and cleaner compositions. A longer focal length made it easier to keep distance while still filling the frame, and the softer morning light helped bring out fur detail without harsh contrast. For photographers visiting Glacier, keeping an eye on rocks and trail edges—and moving slowly—can lead to rewarding, low-impact wildlife opportunities.
