Bighorn Sheep and Lamb on the Cliffs of Badlands National Park
Photographed in Badlands National Park, this image shows a bighorn sheep ewe and her lamb standing together on a narrow cliff ledge above the park’s layered rock formations. Their elevated position highlights how well adapted they are to steep, rugged terrain, where natural escape routes are built into the landscape. Captured from a slightly lower vantage point across a ravine, the composition includes both the animals and the distinctive geology that defines the Badlands. The ewe stands upright and alert, with the lamb close at her side mirroring her posture—typical behavior in exposed areas where visibility is essential for detecting predators. Loose shale underfoot requires deliberate footing, reinforcing how carefully these animals navigate such terrain. Late spring and early summer offer excellent opportunities to photograph ewes with young lambs. Patience and distance are essential when working near cliffs; always prioritize safety and avoid disturbing wildlife. A 400–600mm lens allows for clear, ethical framing, while early morning or late afternoon light enhances the texture and depth of the surrounding rock formations.
