American Bison Grazing Portrait, Yellowstone National Park
This close-up portrait shows an American bison calmly feeding in the grasslands of Yellowstone National Park. Its head is lowered as it pulls up grass with a steady, repetitive motion, which is typical grazing behavior for much of the day. You can see fine details in its thick fur, curved horn, and beard, all of which help the bison handle cold weather and changing seasons. Yellowstone’s open meadows offer plenty of nutritious plants, especially from late spring to early autumn. Soft, even lighting in this scene keeps the texture visible in the bison’s dark coat, so details are not lost as they might be in harsh light. The photo is tightly framed at near-eye level, offering an intimate view while maintaining a safe distance. Using a telephoto lens of 300mm or more helps focus on the bison and blur the background.
