Yucca and Gypsum Dunes Under Patterned Sky, White Sands National Park

This minimalist scene focuses on yucca plants growing out of the gypsum dunes at White Sands National Park. Unlike most deserts, this park’s dunes are made of wind-blown gypsum, not quartz, which gives the landscape its bright white appearance and reveals subtle textures. In the soft evening light, the dunes are lit from the side, so you can see the fine ripple patterns in the sand without harsh contrast. Above, small, evenly spaced clouds add texture to the sky, mirroring the patterns below. The blue sky stands out against the pale dunes, and the warm color of the yucca stalks draws your eye upward. The composition uses a lot of empty space, with the plants placed to balance the photo and lead your gaze through the scene. For this kind of photo, it helps to line up the ripples in the sand with the background. Evening light is great for showing texture without strong shadows, and a wide-angle lens helps separate the plants from the distant horizon.
