Winnter Sunset on the Towers of the Virgin, Zion National Park
The view from the Zion National Park Human History Museum offers one of the clearest perspectives of the Towers of the Virgin, a prominent group of Navajo Sandstone peaks rising above the canyon floor. This winter sunrise scene highlights the upper cliffs of the West Temple, the Altar of Sacrifice, and the Sundial, each showing distinct color bands and erosion patterns shaped by the uplift of the Colorado Plateau. Warm morning light reaches the highest faces first, creating a strong contrast between the illuminated peaks and the cooler tones of the snow‑covered lower slopes. These conditions define the vertical structure of the cliffs and reveal fine textures in the sandstone. The clear sky and soft gradient add balance without distracting from the geological features. Winter often brings cleaner air and more consistent color, making sunset a reliable time to record accurate tones and crisp detail.
