View from the Coastal Guard Trail, West Quoddy Head State Park, Maine

From the Coastal Guard Trail, you can see the open water of the Bay of Fundy beyond the forested cliffs of West Quoddy Head State Park in eastern Maine. The park preserves a rugged stretch of coastline at the eastern tip of the continental United States, with trails winding through coastal headlands, peat bogs, and boreal forests. The Coastal Guard Trail follows the edge of the cliffs, with occasional breaks in the thick spruce and fir trees where you can catch glimpses of the ocean. In this photo, tall evergreens frame a clear view of the distant shoreline across the bay. Late afternoon sunlight filters through the canopy, lighting up the branches and leaves and highlighting the contrast between the shaded forest floor and the bright water beyond. These gaps along the trail are great for framing shots. Trees on both sides help lead the viewer’s eye toward the horizon and show the height of the bluff. On clear days, you can also see layers of atmosphere over the Bay of Fundy, adding depth between the forest and the distant land across the water.
