Underground Limestone Chamber – Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico
This photo captures part of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, one of the largest limestone cave systems in North America. The view is from the Big Room, a huge underground chamber shaped by sulfuric acid dissolving ancient limestone. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, and the uneven floor is dotted with growing stalagmites and flowstone. Artificial lighting brings out the warm colors and textures of the calcite formations. Since there is no natural light, exposure stays consistent, but the mix of lighting means you need to adjust white balance to avoid color shifts. Using a wide-angle lens highlights the crowded formations and draws your eye to the ceiling. The rocks in the foreground add context, while the middle of the frame shows layers of formations.
