Thermal Pool and Mineral Flats at Midway Geyser Basin, Yellowstone
This photo shows a geothermal pool in Midway Geyser Basin at Yellowstone National Park. The basin, next to the Firehole River, has some of the park’s largest hot springs, all heated by a volcanic system below. Silica from the mineral-rich water and thermophilic bacteria create clear color bands, with deep blue in the center and orange and brown at the edges. The picture is taken from a slightly raised spot, so you can see both the pool and the runoff channels around it. These channels naturally lead your eye across the mineral flats to a group of lodgepole pines in the background. The pool stands out as the main focus, and you can see small ripples that show heat is still rising. Above, big cumulus clouds soften the sunlight, so there are no harsh shadows but still some contrast and shape in the sky. This even lighting keeps details visible in both the bright minerals and the darker water.
