Sunset View of Half Dome and the Waterfalls from Glacier Point in Yosemite
This photograph captures the expansive sunset view from Glacier Point, one of Yosemite National Park’s most celebrated overlooks. From this high vantage above Yosemite Valley, Half Dome dominates the scene, its sheer granite face catching the last warm light of the day. To the right, Vernal and Nevada Falls appear along the Merced River corridor, their white cascades contrasting with the darker forested slopes. The distant Sierra Nevada peaks extend across the horizon, their ridgelines tinted by the soft pink and orange tones of the setting sun. A foreground tree adds scale and depth, anchoring the composition against the sweeping backdrop. Glacier Point Road provides seasonal access to several overlooks that reveal the eastern crest of the Sierra Nevada and the full structure of Yosemite Valley. Sunset is particularly effective here, as low‑angle light enhances the granite textures and introduces strong color across the sky. A wide‑angle lens helps incorporate Half Dome, the waterfalls, and the surrounding cliffs into a single cohesive frame. Positioning the camera to balance foreground elements with the distant peaks creates a structured composition that highlights the dramatic vertical relief and geological complexity of Yosemite’s high country.
