Sunset Over the High Peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park

This sunset in Rocky Mountain National Park shows off the park’s alpine features: steep granite peaks, patches of spring snow, and thick subalpine forests in the lower areas. Storm clouds drift over the Continental Divide, but gaps in the clouds let warm evening light hit the upper ridges. The bright peaks and shadowed valleys add depth and highlight the rugged landscape that draws many landscape photographers. The park covers over 400 square miles of high-elevation ecosystems, and from this spot, you can see the shift from wooded foothills to open alpine terrain. Snow patches and dark rocks add texture, and the layered ridges create a simple structure that works well for both wide-angle and short-telephoto shots. Stormy weather like this often brings brief moments of dramatic color and contrast. Placing the forested foreground low in the frame helps show the scale and grounds the scene against the wide mountain backdrop.
