Sunset at Sea Stacks on the North Coast of Olympic National Park

This photo captures a rugged stretch of the Pacific shoreline in Olympic National Park, along the park’s remote North Coast. Here, powerful waves slowly shape the cliffs, sea stacks, and rocky beaches. Over time, softer rocks erode away, leaving behind the tougher formations that stand offshore. A large sea stack stands out on the right side of the image, its steep face and narrow top holding a few wind-bent coastal trees that show how exposed this area is. Smaller sea stacks dot the horizon, adding depth and layers to the scene. The sun is low at sunset, shining between two rock formations. Its warm light reflects across the ocean, creating a path that leads the eye toward the shore. In the foreground, barnacle-covered rocks and shallow tidal pools add texture and a sense of scale. The wide-angle view highlights how the foreground rocks, open water, and tall sea stacks all connect. Many photographers visit this coastline at low tide, when more rocks and tide pools are visible, and it’s easier to move around for different shots.
