Sunrise Reflection at Sprague Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park

At Sprague Lake, sunrise brings out the balance between the alpine landscape and the inviting foreground. The lake sits about 8,700 feet up in Rocky Mountain National Park, with lodgepole pine forests framing the view of the Continental Divide. Early sunlight hits the upper slopes first, warming the rugged peaks while the lower forest stays cool in shadow. When the water is calm, it reflects the scene almost perfectly, creating layers: grasses in front, a thick line of trees in the middle, and sunlit rocks in the distance. Using a wide-angle lens from a low angle lets you include shoreline plants as a leading feature. It’s best to arrive before sunrise to catch the still water, since even a light breeze can break up the reflections. This spot is popular because it’s easy to reach and offers clear views. Standing a bit off the main path can help avoid distractions and crowds. Both clear skies and thin clouds work well here, but the direction of the light is what really shapes the scene’s contrast and depth.
