Sunrise Over Linville Falls and the Linville Gorge, North Carolina

This photo shows the sunrise over Linville Falls in the rugged Linville Gorge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Linville River cuts through hard quartzite and gneiss, creating steep cliffs and several powerful waterfalls as it moves south. This spot is in Pisgah National Forest, which is famous for its unusual geology along the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The rushing water stands out against the sharp, jagged rocks that form the gorge. Using a long exposure makes the rough water look smooth and flowing while still keeping the details of the cliffs and boulders clear. As the sun rises above the edge of the gorge, it creates a starburst of light through the trees, illuminating the forest above while the canyon remains partly in shadow. Landscape photographers often use the overlook trails near the falls to show the layers of the gorge. Early morning light highlights the cliffs and creates sun-star effects when the sun shines through gaps in the trees. Using a wide-angle lens lets them include rocks and plants in the foreground and leads the viewer’s eye along the river through the canyon.
