Sunrise Light on Portland Head Light and the Rocky Maine Coast
This photograph shows Portland Head Light on the coast of Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The lighthouse and its keeper’s quarters sit above a rugged stretch of metamorphic rock, which shapes much of the local shoreline. These rocks form bold lines that lead your eye to the tower and out to the Atlantic. The sky glows with soft sunrise colors, blending smoothly and matching the cooler shades of the rocks and water. This spot is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country, known for its history in guiding ships and its easy-to-reach viewpoints. Photographers can shoot from high up on the cliff path or down near the water, each spot showing a different connection between the rocks and the lighthouse. A wide-angle lens works well here, letting you capture the rocky foreground, the lighthouse, and the islands offshore. Using a longer exposure smooths out water movement, making the whole scene come together.
