Sunrise Along the Big Thompson River in Moraine Park, RMNP
This sunrise view along the Big Thompson River in Moraine Park is one of the best spots in Rocky Mountain National Park for early-morning landscape photos. Using a long exposure smooths out the river, which stands out nicely against the rocks, grasses, and the tall evergreen on the right. As the first light hits the snow-covered peaks, a low mist settles over the meadow, making a clear divide between the cool valley and the warm mountain tops. Moraine Park is in the montane zone, where open meadows, streams, and scattered pines give you plenty of options for your foreground. The Big Thompson River curves gently through the valley, creating natural lines that lead your eye toward the distant peaks. With its flowing water, open spaces, and clear mountain views, this area is a favorite for sunrise shots. Many photographers like it because the sun lights up the peaks before the valley, creating a strong color contrast. Long exposures are especially effective here, softening the river while keeping the rest of the scene sharp. Getting your camera low to the water adds depth and shows the change from meadow to mountain.
