Sunrise Above the Clouds on Trail Ridge Road, Rocky Mountain National Park
This sunrise view from Trail Ridge Road shows one of the most striking sights in Rocky Mountain National Park: a thick cloud inversion filling the valley below. From over 11,000 feet, you can see the rocky tundra in the foreground leading straight to a dense layer of clouds that looks like an inland sea. The first light of morning touches the upper sky, creating soft orange and blue colors that stand out against the cooler shadows on the slopes and among the scattered conifers. Trail Ridge Road runs across the alpine tundra at the top of the Continental Divide, offering visitors wide-open views hard to find in other mountain parks. The mix of bare rock, little vegetation, and a vast sky provides a simple foreground that draws the eye to the bright horizon. Cloud inversions usually form after calm, cool nights, and sunrise is often the best time to see the valley completely covered.
