Storm Light Over Bryce Amphitheater, Bryce Canyon National Park

This image captures the Bryce Amphitheater from Sunrise Point in Bryce Canyon National Park during a passing storm at sunset. The scene combines direct, low-angle light with heavy cloud cover, creating distinct bands of illumination and shadow across the landscape. Sunlight breaks through gaps in the storm, lighting sections of the hoodoos while adjacent areas remain under darker, diffuse conditions. Bryce Canyon’s geology, dominated by the Claron Formation, shows clearly in this light. Alternating layers of limestone, siltstone, and mudstone define the stepped ridgelines and dense spire fields. The contrast from the storm enhances surface texture and reveals subtle color variations, from pale creams to saturated oranges. In the distance, precipitation shafts descend from the clouds, adding depth and scale to the composition. Sunrise Point provides a wide, elevated view into the amphitheater, making it effective for capturing dynamic weather. Late-day storms can produce rapidly changing light, so timing and readiness are critical.
