Steam Vents Along Norris Geyser Trail, Yellowstone National Park

This photo shows an active geothermal area in the Norris Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, as seen from the Norris Geyser Trail. The basin sits on a complex volcanic system and features some of the park’s hottest and most varied hydrothermal spots. Steam vents send up steady plumes over a dry, mineral-rich ground made of silica and altered soils. The late-afternoon light spreads evenly across the area, softening shadows and making the ground’s textures and tones easier to see. In the background, a line of lodgepole pines gives a sense of scale and clearly marks the edge between the geothermal zone and the forest. Using a short telephoto lens brings the steam and trees closer together, making the scene simpler and more focused.
