Sandhill Cranes Over Cottonwoods at Bosque del Apache, New Mexico
This photo captures a group of cottonwood trees in Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, taken in the late afternoon with a telephoto lens. The refuge sits along the Rio Grande and is an important winter home for many migratory birds, especially sandhill cranes. The telephoto view brings the trees, brush, and sky into close, layered bands. Warm sunlight from a low-angle light up the tops of the cottonwoods, showing off their branches and fall colors, while the grasses in front stay muted. A line of sandhill cranes flies across the top of the image, providing a sense of scale and focus without overwhelming the scene. Clouds in the background add depth and contrast, with their cooler colors balancing the warm tones of the plants. Using a telephoto lens keeps the scene simple by cutting out extra foreground and highlighting patterns in the habitat. This approach is great for photographers who want to mix landscape and wildlife. Standing at a moderate distance lets flying birds line up with the treetops, and the late afternoon light brings out texture and separation.
