Rugged Peaks in North Cascades Nation Park, Washington

This photo captures the rugged alpine landscape seen from Washington Pass Overlook in North Cascades National Park, a popular stop on State Route 20. The view looks out toward a group of sharp, spire-like peaks, with Liberty Bell Mountain standing out above the thick subalpine forest. These peaks are mostly granite, shaped over time by tectonic forces and erosion, which gives the skyline its jagged look. At sunrise, the low light highlights the peaks’ textures and shapes, while parts of the forest remain in softer shadow. Thin clouds spread the light more evenly across the sky, softening the contrast. The rock ledge in the foreground anchors the scene, and the tall conifers on either side frame the main peak, adding depth. Using a wide-angle lens brings both the foreground and the distant summit into view, helping to show the scale of the landscape. Setting the camera a bit lower makes the rock spires look even taller, and placing the trees along the edges keeps the composition balanced. Arriving early helps catch the best light and clear views before the sun gets too high.
