Rainbow Mist at Upper Falls, Yellowstone National Park
This photo shows the Lower Falls, the tallest waterfall in Yellowstone National Park, set in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The Yellowstone River drops about 94 meters here, sending up a steady mist that creates a rainbow when the sunlight hits at an angle. The canyon walls display layers of rhyolite in yellow, orange, and pale shades, highlighting the park’s volcanic past. Steep cliffs and scattered conifer trees help show the scale, and the river at the bottom draws your eye to a clear endpoint. The photo was taken from an elevated spot on the canyon’s south rim, giving a direct view of the falls and river below. The scene is framed tightly enough to keep the waterfall the main focus, while still including the surrounding canyon. Side lighting brightens the mist and rainbow, while parts of the canyon remain in shadow. For photographers, placing the falls slightly off-center and using the canyon edges to frame the shot, with the river leading through the image, creates a strong composition.
