Norris Geyser Basin Thermal Pools and Forest, Yellowstone National Park

This photo shows the geothermal landscape of Norris Geyser Basin, one of the hottest and most active areas in Yellowstone National Park. In the center, you can see shallow, mineral-rich pools with a bright turquoise color, caused by dissolved silica and heat-loving microbes. Behind the pools, a thick stand of lodgepole pine stretches across the middle of the scene, and a wide mountain ridge rises in the background, giving a sense of scale. The midday sunlight brings out the textures and subtle colors on the ground, and the high viewpoint lets you see the layers of the scene: pools in the foreground, forest in the middle, and mountains in the background. The curved edges of the water naturally lead your eye through the photo. This spot is easy to reach by boardwalk and has a strong composition. For more contrast and visible steam, try photographing when the sun is lower, and on calm days, the pools reflect clearly.
