Morning Glow at Colorado National Monument
At sunrise, Independence Monument stands out as one of the most recognizable features in Colorado National Monument. The first rays of morning light touch the upper cliffs, bringing out the red and orange colors of the Wingate Sandstone that shapes much of the area. Meanwhile, the canyon walls below remain in shadow, making the monolith’s height and isolation even more striking. The sky’s gentle color shift adds depth without distracting from the rocks. Independence Monument rises from Monument Canyon, a landscape formed by uplift and erosion along the northeastern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Rugged cliffs, scattered plants, and open desert show the region’s impressive scale. From this viewpoint, your eyes move from the textured foreground to the sunlit spire and the far canyon walls.
