Lewis River Canyon in Afternoon Light, Yellowstone National Park
The photo shows the Lewis River winding through a narrow canyon in Yellowstone National Park. The river cuts a clear path between steep rock walls composed of ancient volcanic rock. Thick lodgepole pines grow along the canyon rim and stretch into the distance, showing the park’s subalpine environment. Afternoon sunlight comes in from the side, creating strong contrasts on the canyon walls. Where the sun hits, the rocks look warm, while the shaded parts stay cool and muted. This mix adds depth and highlights the canyon’s tall, vertical shape. The river acts as a leading line, drawing your eye through the scene and into the background. From a photographer’s view, the high vantage point gives a good look at both the river and the canyon’s shape. Using a moderate or wide lens lets you include trees in the foreground to frame the shot and keep the gorge’s sense of scale.
