Leading Dune Ridge at Sunrise, White Sands National Park

This photo uses a wide-angle view to highlight a dune ridge at sunrise in White Sands National Park. The park’s large gypsum dunes reflect a lot of light, so early morning is ideal for highlighting the details. The ridge starts in the foreground and runs diagonally, drawing your eye through the scene. Ripples in the sand up close add texture and a sense of scale, while the smoother slopes behind them create contrast. Soft sunrise light hits the top of the dune, making a bright line along the ridge and fading gently into shadow. Warm colors near the horizon shift to cooler blues higher up, giving the sky depth without taking over the picture. Distant dunes appear in layers, adding to the feeling of a continuous landscape. The low camera angle brings out the texture in the foreground and makes the leading line stand out. Placing the ridge diagonally helps the scene flow, and careful exposure keeps details visible in both the bright and shaded areas.
