Granite Coastal Cliffs at Bass Harbor, Acadia National Park
This photo captures the rugged Atlantic coast near Bass Harbor in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The shoreline has exposed granite shaped by glaciers and years of coastal erosion. Large broken slabs and clusters of boulders create a stepped cliff that leads down to the ocean, giving the landscape bold, natural lines. Soft evening light shines on the rocks from the right, bringing out warm colors in the granite and showing off its textures. The ocean looks calm and smooth, due to a longer exposure that softens the waves but keeps some movement near the rocks. Clouds stretch across the sky, letting in gentle light that balances the land and sea. From a photographer’s point of view, this higher spot clearly separates the foreground rocks from the open Atlantic in the distance. The slanted cliff leads your eye toward the water.
