Grand Prismatic Spring Patterns, Yellowstone National Park

This photo shows the detailed surface patterns around Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park. The shot draws attention to the interlocking mineral plates and microbial mats, with thin, dark channels marking where thermal water flows between the shapes. The bright orange and yellow colors come from heat-loving microorganisms that live along the cooler edges of the spring, while lighter mineral crusts show where new deposits are forming. These patterns are shaped by ongoing hydrothermal activity. As hot, mineral-rich water moves away from the spring, it cools and leaves behind silica, which builds up as thin ridges and textured surfaces. Over time, changes in the water’s path create new shapes, so the surface is always changing. Soft, diffused light brings out fine details and avoids harsh shadows, helping capture subtle changes in tone. Shooting from above and up-close highlights the scene's abstract quality.
