Geothermal Runoff Falls at Midway Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park
This photo captures geothermal runoff pouring over mineral formations into the Firehole River at Yellowstone, seen from across the river near Midway Geyser Basin. The superheated water runs over rocks coated with iron and sulfur deposits, creating bright yellow, orange, and green colors. Steam rises, partially obscuring the background, making the hillside look softer and adding depth. The cloudy sky provides even, gentle light, keeping details visible in both the bright water and the darker rocks. Mist drifts through the scene, adding layers, while the dark water in the foreground balances the image. Shooting from across the river gives a clear view of the runoff and uses the river as a foreground anchor. A slightly higher angle helps separate the cascades from the hillside behind. Using a long exposure, as in this image, can make the water look smooth and highlight flow patterns, while a fast shutter speed preserves the texture of falling streams.
