Foggy Coastal Cliffs Near Western Point, Acadia National Park

This photo shows a rugged part of the Atlantic coast in Acadia National Park, near Western Point on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The park includes much of Maine’s rocky shoreline and features ancient granite shaped by glaciers and the sea. From this high viewpoint, steep cliffs drop to a narrow, rocky shore where waves move between large boulders. Low marine fog lowers the contrast and softens the distant shoreline, creating gentle layers in the scene. The soft light removes harsh shadows and brings out subtle colors in the granite, from gray to warm rust. Evergreen shrubs and coastal conifers in the foreground add texture and scale, framing the view on the right. For landscape photographers, this kind of overlook offers great compositional options. The edge of the cliff forms a diagonal line that leads the viewer’s eye to the ocean. Using a wide-angle lens lets you include both the foreground plants and the rocks below. Fog is common along the Maine coast on summer mornings and after calm nights, creating even light that helps capture details in the complex coastal landscape.
