First Light Over Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park

This photo captures the eroded badlands at Zabriskie Point just as the sun rises. From this spot, you can see a maze of sharp ridges and gullies shaped by layers of sediment and years of erosion. The land, mostly made up of Furnace Creek sediments, shows a mix of pale beige, brown, and gray tones. Early sunlight comes in at a low angle, lighting up the ridges' tops and leaving the deeper channels in shadow. This soft, angled light brings out the land's texture and makes the shapes stand out without creating harsh contrasts. Thin clouds spread across the sky, adding gentle color changes that complement the scene. Zabriskie Point is one of the easiest places to reach in Death Valley National Park and gives a clear view of the classic badlands landscape. Its height lets you look out over the basin, which is great for capturing the layers of the land. Getting there before sunrise gives you time to find the best composition as the light slowly reveals the shapes.
