Desert Light, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

This photo captures a dense cluster of cacti in the Sonoran Desert, within the Organ Pipe Cactus Wilderness at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona, near the U.S.-Mexico border. The monument protects one of North America's most diverse desert ecosystems and is the main U.S. home of the organ pipe cactus, a multi-stemmed species rarely found farther north. Here, low desert plants cover a gentle slope, while tall saguaro and organ pipe cacti stand above creosote, bursage, and scattered shrubs. Behind the cacti, steep volcanic and granite mountains glow with warm orange and red in the late-day sun, standing out against the cooler green shades of the desert plants. These rugged mountains are part of the Ajo Range, a key feature of the monument. The photo uses a wide-angle lens to highlight the plants in the foreground while still showing the sunlit mountains clearly. The space between the saguaros and organ pipe cacti creates natural lines that lead your eye through the picture. Photographers often shoot in this kind of desert during golden hour, when the low sun brings out the textures of the cacti and adds detail to the landscape without the harsh shadows of midday.
