Coastal Arch and Sea Stacks at Mendocino Headlands

This landscape photograph shows Mendocino Headlands along the Mendocino Headlands Trail on California’s northern coast. Steep coastal bluffs frame a narrow cove, while a natural sea arch spans fractured rock shaped by sustained wave erosion. The headlands consist of uplifted marine terraces formed through tectonic activity along the Pacific margin, with ongoing erosion continuing to define the coastline. The area falls within Mendocino Headlands State Park, protecting both its geological features and coastal habitats. Summer conditions and an overcast sky produce soft, evenly diffused light across the scene. A long exposure fully blurs ocean movement, turning the surf into a smooth surface that contrasts with the sharp textures of the cliffs and arch. This approach simplifies the water and emphasizes coastal structure. From a photographic perspective, the elevated trail vantage point provides clear separation between foreground water, midground rock formations, and the distant horizon. A wide-angle composition captures both sides of the cove, while careful alignment of the arch prevents visual overlap with the opposing cliffs and maintains compositional balance.
