Autumn View from Angel Falls Overlook, Big South Fork
This photo was taken from Angel Falls Overlook on the Grand Gap Loop in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. From here, you can see the South Fork of the Cumberland River winding through a wide, forested gorge on the Cumberland Plateau. Tall sandstone cliffs line the rim, and far below, the river weaves between boulders and gravel bars. In autumn, the scene is filled with color. The valley slopes are covered in hardwood forests, showing off a mix of yellow, orange, red, and green leaves. Trees like oak, maple, hickory, and tulip poplar add different textures and patterns to the hillsides. These forests are an important part of Big South Fork, which protects over 125,000 acres of plateau, river gorge, and sandstone bluff habitat. The photo features an exposed rock ledge and a steep cliff in the foreground, giving a sense of scale and depth before the view opens to the river valley below. Soft late-afternoon light, just before sunset, highlights the warm colors in the leaves without creating harsh shadows.
