Autumn Light on Chimney Rock, Uncompahgre National Forest
This photo shows a telephoto view of Chimney Rock from Owl Creek Overlook in Uncompahgre National Forest at the height of fall color. The shot brings together layers of dense aspen groves and conifer forests, culminating in steep, eroded volcanic cliffs. These cliffs, shaped by the San Juan Mountains’ geologic history, rise sharply above the trees and stand out in the scene. Light breaks through the heavy clouds, highlighting parts of the forest. Bright yellow aspens stand out against the darker evergreens, creating a colorful pattern in the middle of the image. The cliffs catch warm light on their faces, while shadows show off their rugged shapes. Owl Creek Overlook is a great spot to capture this view, especially in autumn when the aspens are at their brightest. Using a longer lens helps focus on the play of light and shadow, making the layers more noticeable. Timing is important, since changing clouds can quickly shift which parts of the landscape are lit by the sun.
