Active Geyser Pool in Lower Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park

This photo shows an active geyser pool in Yellowstone’s Lower Geyser Basin. The deep blue color hints at the pool’s depth and clarity, while minerals and the movement of hot water create a visible upwelling in the center. Around the pool, mineral deposits form uneven terraces with yellow and orange stains, caused by heat-loving organisms. Steam drifts across the basin, softening the view of scattered lodgepole pines and open geothermal flats in the background. The cloudy sky gives even lighting, so you can see subtle color changes and fine surface details without harsh shadows—photo taken from a slightly raised spot on the boardwalk, which provides safe, steady access. Using a fast shutter speed freezes the water as it erupts, and framing the shot with the mineral edge helps guide your eye through the scene.
