Colorado - San Juan Mountains

The San Juan Mountain range in the southern part of the Rocky Mountains offers spectacular views of deep valleys, beautiful mountain lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, waterfalls, and several high-altitude plateaus and jagged peaks. There are five fourteeners with the highest one in the region, Uncompahgre Peak, reaching an elevation of 14,321 feet, and a few slightly lower ones, Mount Wilson, Mount Sneffels, Mount Eolus, Handies Peak, and San Luis Peak. A section of the Continental Divide runs through the San Juan Mountains with headwaters of the Rio Grande on the east side and having San Juan, Dolores, and Gunnison rivers on its western slope. For landscape photographers, this region offers many opportunities to capture breathtaking mountain scenery, especially during the fall season when Aspen trees turn golden yellow and mountain peaks accumulate some fresh snow.
