Colorado - Elk Mountains

The Elk Mountains, a segment of the southern Rocky Mountains, sits on the western side of the Continental Divide and occupies a large section of mid-western Colorado. The Elk Mountains contain three wilderness areas, including the West Elk Wilderness, Marron Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, and Raggeds Wilderness. Six fourteeners are among the finest in the Rockies and the most prominent in the Elk Mountains. The highest peak in the range is Castel Peak, reaching an elevation of 14,265 feet, followed by Maroon Peak (14,156 ft), Capitol Peak (14,130 ft), Snowmass Mountain (14,092 ft), Pyramid Peak (14,018 ft), and North Maroon Peak (14,014 ft). The Marron Peak and North Marron Peak are known as Marron Bells and are considered the most popular and picturesque in the area. The Elk Mountains offer spectacular views of beautiful alpine lakes, crystal clear streams, lush green vegetation, and jagged peaks. The site is exceptionally breathtaking during the fall season, when entire slopes turn orange, yellow, and red, providing some of the most impressive sceneries your camera can capture.
